Short Term Disability Insurance
Protecting yourself and your family from the unexpected is the key to maintaining financial security. But what would happen if you became sick or injured and unable to work for a period of time? How long could your savings support all of your family’s needs? Unum’s Individual Short Term Disability Insurance can help you replace a portion of your monthly income in the event of a disability. You may make one plan election.
Advantages of the plan
- Guaranteed Issue is available up to $3,000 for those who previously waived coverage or those currently enrolled wishing to increase. No medical exam or health questions are required.
- Mental illnesses are covered.
- This benefit does not offset with CCHMC’s group disability policy, individual disability policies, or social security. This means you get 100% of the benefit amount you elect.
- After nine months of coverage, you are eligible to receive a benefit for pregnancy. After birth, you will be paid a benefit after satisfying the elimination period.
Why should I purchase additional Short Term Disability coverage with the new fully-funded plan?
- It supplements any benefits you receive from the CCHMC-paid plan, which means you could potentially receive a benefit greater than 100% of your pay during an approved disability leave.
- The benefits are tax-free. The benefit you receive from the CCHMC-paid plan will be taxed just like regular earnings.
- You can buy coverage that starts after 90 days or 180 days, which is about the time that benefits from the CCHMC-paid plan are reduced. If you don’t have a lot of EIB, this benefit can be quite valuable.
- The coverage is portable. If you choose to leave CCHMC, the plan can go with you.
